Typically, the Seachem Matrix excels in aggressively targetting a wide range of impurities in different types of aquarium setups. Replace with new Purigen or regenerate?

When the formerly white beads have turned dark brown or black, and thus the absorption capacity of Purigen has been exhausted, it is time to insert fresh Seachem Purigen into the filter. You don’t need to buy new Purigen because the chemical filter medium can be regenerated in a few simple steps.

Regeneration instructions proceed as follows:

1. Get a shallow non-metallic container, as it is more effective for regeneration than a tall one.
2. Fill the container with a 50:50 ratio of tap water and chlorine bleach (8,25% pure bleach is recommended by Seachem, nothing scented or colored). If your bleach has a lower percentage, you should adjust the bleach-to-water ratio as best as possible. We use a solution of Cleanit, our bleach product, and tap water.
3. Take out the Purigen of the filter bag and flatten it out in the container’s solution. The 100 ml version can stay in its sealed bag because the bag is chlorine-resistant.
4. The Purigen beads should remain in the chlorine bath for 24 hours. Stirring the beats halfway or turning the bag is helpful for complete regeneration.
5. Rinse Purigen thoroughly with water to remove the chlorine without leaving any residue. There should be no noticeable chlorine odor after rinsing. Seachem recommends placing Purigen in a water bath enriched with water conditioner for an additional 8 hours to remove any remaining chlorine safely. It is advisable to increase the dosage of the water conditioner by a multiple of the amount recommended by the manufacturer. Step 5 is essential and should never be omitted for the welfare of your livestock!

Seachem Purigen Use in a Fluval Spec Aquarium:

There are some challenges in finding the best place to put the 100ml bag of Purigen in the filter box of a Fluval Spec.  I usually run two separate bags of Biomax in the two compartments.  Initially, I decided to keep those two bags of ceramic rings in place and simply place the bag of Purigen on top of the filter block.

It kind of fits in this spot, although the bag is a bit too wide. I just shoved it in there an it kind of pillows up in the space.  It is not long enough to fill the compartment so some water bypasses on either end.  The other problem with placement here is that this product is not designed to be run dry – it needs to be submerged.  If your water level gets a bit low, the top of this bag will be exposed.

The water wasn’t getting dramatically cleaner with the Purigen just plopped on top and I got the idea from a forum to place the bag in one of the two compartments cut out of the foam block.

You just fold it in half and shove it in place.  Here I have the Purigen bag in the top section and the bag of Biomax ceramic rings in the bottom.  It fits very nicely in this position. Here is a picture showing how it looks from the other side.

These two pictures were taken after a few months of use; note the dark icky-ness that is starting to build up.

The flow in this arrangement is much better resulting in the clarity improvements I was expecting all along. Even so, I feel like the Purigen would perform even better in an arrangement where the water is fully forced through the entirety of a submerged bag.  This is part of the weakness of the stock Fluval Spec filter block – water will always want to take the path of least resistance, which is around the media inside those cutouts.  Those using this filter pouch in a canister filter will probably realize much more efficient cleaning.

How To Recharge Purigen Without Prime?

There are a lot of queries regarding the recharge of purigen without prime. The use of Seachem prime is needed to maintain the pH of purigen. Seachem always recommends using prime for maintaining the pH.

But the truth is that you need any de-chlorinator and not only the seachem prime. They always recommend their product prime because they know a lot about their about, and it may be a marketing strategy.

But you can use any dechlorinator which does not have any slime coat additive or Aloe vera.

You can search any dechlorinator with the properties same as mentioned above, and I can also recommend the product that I use mostly. Marine master water ager is one of the dechlorinator that I mostly use.

Overall Impressions:

So, does it live up to the hype? I’m not sure if it is as great as some reviews made it out to be.  I can indeed tell there is water in the tank – no fish floating on air confusion.  But, clarity is improved with the Purigen in use.  It does work very well and I think I will have Purigen in my Aquariums for a long time.

The cost is very good.  I got my 100 ml bag of purigen on Amazon for about $10.  Considering that you can regenerate it up to 10 times, that makes it quite a deal.  If you regenerate every 4 months, that would be over 3 years of crystal clear water.  I think it is well worth the money and one of the best aquarium products I have purchased.

I have not noticed any issues using Purigen in a planted aquarium, so their claims that it leaves the fertilizers that you are adding along seem to be true.

I can’t yet speak to the regeneration process, but I hope to do that shortly and will offer a separate post detailing how to clean Purigen and if that is worth the effort.

Is It Safe To Recharge Purigen?

The regeneration of the purigen is a cheap way not to spend money on changing it and make many people think it is not safe.

But it is a thing that many experts and aquarists have experimentally proved. However, sometimes the person’s mistakes during the process of recharge may lead to adverse results.

How Many Times Can Purigen Be Recharged?

A purigen can be recharged maximally 10 times before it is the time to say Goodbye. But it may also depend on what type of condition you have in your tank.

Whenever your purigen is reached its capacity and does not work properly, you need to regenerate it. According to the seachem, every time you recharge the purigen, it loses its 10% purity it means you can recharge it 10 times but it is not recommended to go for more than 6 to 7 times.

Seachem Prime

Seachem Prime has the same qualities as stability, though it does more in terms of removal of toxins. Apart from introducing into the tank healthy bacteria to reduce toxic elements including ammonia, Seachem Prime also does away with chlorine. A concentrated conditioner for fresh and salt water, seachem prime has the ability to convert ammonia into a non-toxic form which is safe and can therefore be removed by the bio filter in tank.

It can be used when cycling the tank for removal of nitrite toxicity too. When used, it readily detoxifies nitrite as well as nitrates. This gives room for the bio filter to work more efficiently in toxin removal.

• Detoxification of heavy metals present in tap water at usual concentrations.
• It is non acidic. It will therefore not impact on pH levels of water. Neither does it activate skimmers.
• Helps in the generation of slime coat.

How to Recharge Purigen

We mentioned earlier that recharging Purigen is easy and can be done up to 10 times. Let’s go step by step into Seachem Purigen regeneration:

1. You will first take out the saturated mesh bag of Purigen (we said saturation would be easy to detect due to a color change) and put it in a clean container. You will need to rinse the bag of pumice to remove the easily cleanable debris.
2. Next up, you will need to mix water and bleach on a 1:1 ratio ( notably, the total amount isn’t really important because keeping the ratio at 1:1 is critical). The mesh bag will need to sit in this mixture for about 24 hours without being disturbed too much.
3. After the designated 24 hours have passed, you will rinse the mesh bag again to remove the bleach. Be careful here to avoid getting any bleach on your clothes or skin.
4. Proceed by filling a bowl with enough tank water to cover the Purigen bag. In this water bowl, you’re going to add about two capfuls of primer. The reason for this is to make sure that all the bleach is neutralized and the chemicals are detoxified. The Purigen will stay in this mixture for another 24 hours.
5. The amount of time the Purigen stays in the water-primer mixture is important because it ensures that all the chlorine has been thoroughly removed from the pumice. A way to test if there is any remaining chlorine in the Purigen is by smelling the mesh bag, and if you can detect any chlorine at all by the smell, it needs to go back into the primer.

That wraps up the regeneration process. After that last step and the chlorine test have been completed successfully, you can use the newly regenerated Seachem Purigen anytime you want.

It would be worth mentioning that, since this filter media can be regenerated up to 10 times, you might want to label some zip lock back with the number of times the respective Purigen mesh bag has been regenerated to keep track and not waste your efforts and product.

Конечно, все эти теории могут по-разному интерпретироваться, иной раз наше восприятие картины может приводить к искажению смысла, которым ее автор хотел передать. Тем не менее, именно такие мелочи помогают нам понять насколько глубоко и интересно данную тему могут преподнести нам другие авторы.

Задачи исследования

Знаменитый эксперимент «Вселенная-25» (англ. Universe 25) – самая известная работа американского ученого-этолога Джона  Кэлхуна. Он проводил исследования на животных с целью прогнозирования развития человечества: моделировал различные условия для грызунов и наблюдал за подопытными, составлял выводы и проводил аналогии с обществом людей.

По результатам ранее проведенных экспериментов, Джон  Кэлхун сформулировал новый термин «поведенческая раковина» (англ. behavioral sink) – это переход к девиантному деструктивному поведению животных в условиях перенаселения и скученности. Благодаря введению этого феномена он стал известен в 60-х годах 20 века, когда европейское общество переживало послевоенный беби-бум и задумывалось о проблеме увеличения плотности людей на привычной территории.

Власти и социологов беспокоило влияние перенаселения на общественные институты и каждого человека в отдельности. Это и стало предметом исследования в знаменитом эксперименте – попытка понять, что случится с обществом в таких условиях. Также было интересно понаблюдать за тем, как будут вести себя грызуны в условиях достатка – к этому стремились люди во все времена, но непонятно, к каким последствиям сытая жизнь без проблем может привести.

«Вселенная–25» – самый известный эксперимент по изучению жизни грызунов в идеальных условиях, все предыдущие провалились. 25 – это порядковый номер исследования, которое стартовало в июле 1968 года в Национальном институте психологического здоровья в США.
